Muddy Buddies are one of my favorite childhood treats. Only we called it puppy chow– and I’m not really sure why. I think my mom made it for every road trip we went on, and let me tell you, it didn’t last long in a car full of three boys and this food-lovin’-girl.
I hadn’t made the stuff in years and now I know why….It’s so darn addicting.
I decided to put a Halloween twist on the classic muddy buddies and threw in some candy corn, Reese’s Pieces, and pretzels. An extra touch of chewy sweetness, an extra touch of peanut butter, and a little touch of salt and crunch.
This is that one bowl of stuff at that one Halloween party that people just can’t stop munching on. Or it’s that super cute little Halloween treat you packaged up and gave to friends.
Or it’s thee-most-addicting-Halloween-Muddy-Buddy-Mix-you’ve-ever-tasted– and ate it by the handfuls. All by yourself.
Take your pick. All three are wonderful.
Halloween Muddy Buddy Mix
Ingredients
9 cups Corn or Rice Chex Cereal
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup peanut butter
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 1/2 cups candy corn
1 1/2 cups Reese’s Pieces
2 cups pretzels (can be the minis, regular, sticks)
Instructions
Pour Chex Cereal in a large bowl and set aside.
In a microwave safe bowl melt chocolate chips, butter and peanut butter together on high for one minute. Stir and return to microwave, microwaving in 30 second increments until melted together and smooth. Stir in vanilla.
Pour chocolate-peanut butter mixture over the cereal and gently stir to coat. I like to put on a pair of kitchen gloves and use my hands to toss the cereal in the chocolate so I don’t crush it. Place cereal in a large zip lock bag, pour powdered sugar in, seal and shake until evenly coated.
Spread cereal out on to wax paper and let cool completely.
In a large bowl combine cereal, candy corn, Reese’s Pieces, and pretzels. Store in an air-tight container.

i have been making this for years but was taught it was called garbage…simply because when pour the choc mixture over the chex cereal it is MUCH easier to dump the cereal into a small CLEAN trash bag and then pour in the choc mix and shake!!! then dump in the powdered sugar and shake your heart out…pour into a large bowl and you have a no mess desert with easy clean up..just throw the trash bag away and alllll done!

Its called puppy chow because it does resemble what used to be purina puppy chow bits.
The original puppy food had a white powder coating on it .
