The boys, all four of my boys, went on their first Fathers + Sons campout over the weekend. Just one night. It was the first time, like ever, that I can remember them leaving me to do something together. I mean, Brett’s taken them to run errands here and there to give me a little “time to myself” or I’m usually the one to leave them overnight for a girls weekend. But it was just me at the house for just less than 24 hours and it was strangely nice. I got a manicure, went to dinner with girlfriends, then came home and went to bed early. And Saturday morning I slept in, went for a late morning run down at Pacific Beach (and realized that’s where the cool people hang), and got myself a giant diet coke from Sonic on the way home. It felt sooooo good to have that time, just for me. But as soon as they were home, THAT felt so much more normal.
<My little campers. Next time, I’m going too!>
As for Mother’s Day, the boys made me a yummy breakfast in bed, delivered the sweetest handwritten notes, and they even let me pick out the family movie that night. {We watched Sing. Such a good one, I can’t believe we hadn’t seen it yet!} And then there was this fun fact: Brett and I forgot to buy the ribs for the fancy dinner he was going to make me when we were at the grocery store the night before. And we didn’t even realize it until Sunday morning. So instead we had chicken sausages and hot dogs for Mother’s day dinner. Can anyone beat that?
All three boys decided they didn’t like hot dogs, threw fits, and really dinner ended up being quite a disaster. The boys fought. Graham was exhausted from not having a nap and was particularly feisty. Brett and I tried our hardest not to lose it, so we both just laughed. We’ve been reading the book “SOS: Help for Parents” and we were both thinking–“We need to finish that book, ASAP” I’ve been doing this mom-thang for 7 years and still feel like a rookie guys. So yeah, I’ll take all the self -help parenting books 🙂 The book is a good btw, my SIL recommended it to us!
Anyways, I shared this picture from some photos we took earlier last the week on instagram yesterday–and while I LOVE these pictures (and this Solika dress) I wanted to share what my actual Mother’s day looked like. A little messy, sooo far from perfect, but still so wonderful. Isn’t that just how motherhood is? The hard, not so good stuff always gets outweighed by the good stuff. The good ol’ small stuff! Like handwritten notes. Sharing breakfast in bed. Snuggling and watching a movie together.
And sweet kisses. Give me all the kisses!
I hope you all had a great (even if not perfect) Mother’s Day and are having a good start to your week!
