Now, how about some Frito Pie?
What I love about this Oven-Baked Frito Pie is the layer of Frito’s on the bottom of the chili as well as on the top. I pretty much love Frito’s…they are the most addicting little chips ever….so get a big bag! The chips on top get nice and toasted and the cheese throughout it gets nice and melted as well.
The chili comes together in a cinch, and although it seems there are a lot of steps, it all really comes together pretty quickly.
- 1 lb. lean ground beef
- 1 can (16 oz) chili beans
- 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes
- 1 envelope low sodium taco seasoning
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (2% fat kind)
- 3 1/2 cups corn chips (Frito's)
- 1 1/4 cup fat free sour cream
- Cook ground beef until meat is browned; drain. Stir in beans, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, taco seasoning mix and 1/4 c. of cheese. Sprinkle 1 cup corn chips in bottom of 8x8 baking dish or 9x13 dish. Cover with chili. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes. Spread sour cream over chili. Top with remaining corn chips and cheese. Bake 4-5 minutes longer.
- **I froze half of the chili so essentially halved everything else (half the chips, half the cheese, half the sour cream. You get it) and put it together in a small round casserole dish (smaller than an 8x8).

Loving the new look, what an exciting time!
And this recipe looks fantastic, have you ever tried Walking Tacos? You use the same ingredients you have here but you buy the little packets of Frito chips and put all of the fixings INTO the bag. They’re super kid friendly and taste SO good!

@Jess, we used to do that with mini Frito bags when we’d go camping. But I love that you call them Walking Tacos-so fun!

I’m in Texas and we’re finally having some fall weather today so I went to the grocery store and bought all of the stuff to make this. We just finished eating and my whole family is moaning and groaning with full bellies, after ooohing and aaaahing with each bite!! This was delicious! So much better than Frito chili pie with can chili and far less sickening. Two thumbs up!! (Btw, I used more cheese than what you called for just because, well, it didn’t seem like it would be cheesy enough for me and my family 🙂

Should I drain the beans or tomato?
Kristy {Sweet Treats and More} says
@ anonymous: You don’t need to drain the beans or tomato!
Alexandria @ TheFatLossAuthority says
I am going to have to most definitely make this one! I have always loved Frito pie, but this one looks much better than any I have ever had or attempted to make. Looks pretty easy to make too. Thanks Kristy!

I made this but used a can of chili that I had extra from a nasty butt hot dog recipe I tried last night. I added more cheese and fritos because I like my frito pie extra chip-y, lol. I also topped with some finely diced onion after the last bake. I will never make frito pie another way. I love the way it’s layered…I love that it is baked. Next time I will make the chili for it, too… Sooo good!

YUM, I want some right now, this looks delicious! 🙂

This Frito Pie looks amazing. I am a Frito addict. I don’t keep them in the house, I could eat a whole bag. But this looks like a fantastic reason to buy them! Covered in that fantastic chili, yum!

My family is not too fond of beans in the chili…Have you tried the Rotel Chili Fixins’? I usually run it through my mini food processor first…kids don’t like the chunky tomatoes :/ My picky #2 daughter recently ate Frito chili pie @ a lock-in and has been asking for it…Anyway…think I will get the stuff for this tonight. It’s a little cool here 🙂

This recipe is great. I left out the beans because my daughter doesn’t like them and used diced tomatoes with diced chilies. I also added sliced Jalepenos and more fritos at the end. We loved it.
Julie says
I searched all over the store for chilli beans, not seeing the pic first, (ziplist.com). I have never heard of them, then looked at the pic, lol they are pinto beans here. Making it with chilli tonight. lol.
Courtney says
just wondering, when making this do you grease the dish?
Kristy {Sweet Treats and More} says
Yes I did! I should add that to instructions! Thanks!

I just made this last night and it was soooo good! I was a little skeptical about a chilli made that quick, but it was SO good! I couldnt find “chilli beans” so i used “texas style baked beans” the taste was awesome! Even better the next day! Thanks for the recipe 🙂
NIKA says
Can we make this in a casserole dish? or we have to have those small dishes?
NIKA says
I got a question.. the food looks AWESOME.. i want to try today so can i make this in a big casserole dish, or do I have to have those small casserole dishes?
Kristy {Sweet Treats and More} says
You can make it in a 9X13 inch cake pan/casserole dish.

The canned chili gave it a “dog food-y” flavor that we didn’t like. Also the only way the turkey would be better for you is if the skin wasn’t included in the processing phase…otherwise, ground turkey actually contains MORE fat than lean hamburger.
Jackie says
You forgot to tell us when to add the diced tomatoes.

i am sure it’s good but real chili doesn’t have beans

Made this dish for dinner tonight, and it was delicious, however if I were to make it again would definitely use 9×13 instead of 8×8 because it was like overflowing out of my 8×8 casserole dish, but definitely thought it was delicious

This is AWESOME! Pinning it for dinner ideas, thanks!

Wondering if you can make this a day ahead. Then just warm it in the oven the day you will eat it?
Kristy Denney says
The bottom layer of frito chips might get soggy if you make the day before. You could leave them out and just sprinkle them on top when ready to bake!

That looks great and very kid friendly. I am thinking to add a jar of salsa though instead if plain diced tomatoes which ar enot very flavorful.

I’ve never heard of a frito… and I realise that this is an old recipe post but I just found it and I want to make it! I might substitute some other corn chips, but the fritos look extra crispy and delicious. What an amazing casserole. Definitely going to hunt down the ingredients and try it.
