The hustle and bustle of Christmas and shopping reminded me of this refreshing treat. And I happen to love this homemade version even better. Especially when, heaven for bid, the nearest mall is four hours away. I no longer live in the boonies but still prefer this homemade Orange Julius.
So drink up….
- 1/2 cup low-fat or skim milk
- 1/2 cup cold water
- 2 tbs sugar or sugar substitute
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 4-5 ice cubes
- 6 oz frozen orange juice concentrate (I cut a 12 oz can of frozen orange juice in half and save the other half for your next smoothie)
- **add one egg white (optional-helps make it frothier!)
- Place everything in a blender and blend for several minutes until smooth and frothy.

loved this growing up and still make it once in a while…definitely brings back childhood memories. My Mom always made this although in Dom. Rep. we called it “morir sonando” which just means to die sleeping in Spanish. It’s so good, also had it with lemon/limes. Thanks for posting, your blog is lovely!

I just made this, and it’s delicious! It was a bit too orange-y for me, so I added another splash of milk after it was blended. Yum!!!

OMG I LOVED these back in the 80’s!!! My favorite place to eat in the Mall! Thanks for the recipe. What a treat. 🙂

We’ve been making Orange Julius at home using a similar recipe for years. YUM.

I have been making these for years since I can not find a store that makes these anywhere close to me. The only thing I do differently is I use powdered sugar instead of granular. It mixes with the cold ingrediants so much better. Thanks for the great blog (just found you via pinterest). Happy New Year!

This brings back Memories! I didn’t get to go to the Mall very often and hated the times we would go and would hear the words ( You don’t need one of those)! or ( Those are to Expensive)! So I am soooo Excited to see this Recipe. Thanks! Just became a follower of yours.
Happy New Year! :0)

I used one fresh orange and a splash of orange juice because I did not have concentrate on hand. The freshness was amazing! I added some coconut rum afterwards and it just added to the deliciousness!

Do you remember also that they would add powdered egg if you wanted it?!

Ah yes, memories…They were my favorite too!!

Found this on Pinterest….never heard of it!…but definately going to give it a go!

I make something similar to this but the recipe I do calls for 1 cup each of milk and water and 1/3-1/2 cup sugar. That cuts the orangeynish a little bit for those who find the above version a little too strong. I also add ice until I get the consistency I like. Great thing is you can substitute the orange with any fruit and tweak the other things to accommodate. One of our favorites to do in the summer is stawberry!

Found you on Pinterest and will try this using plain yogurt instead of milk, or Silk Almond Milk with a fresh orange and Vanilla protein powder. I feel healthier already. THANKS for posting.

I’ve used equal parts orange juice and rice or soy milk along with an E-mergency pack to create a quick version of it. You can blend it up with ice but I always thought it was cold enough.

We made these when I was growing up. The only difference is we added a raw egg to it. Oh I want one NOW ! 🙂
Audree_buttercup says
THis is pretty much exactly the same as the recipe that we use at home. One thing that I have found makes it a bit more delicious (if that’s possible) is to use powdered sugar instead of granulated sugar. Only use 1 Tblsp though or it will be too sweet.
Bob McNelis says
Not sure if anyone else wrote this, but the recipe is missing egg whites. They help make this “frothier”!
Kristy {Sweet Treats and More} says
Thanks Bob! I left the egg whites out because my son is allergic to eggs, but you’re absolutely right, it does make it frothier! I’ll add it in as a note:)
Thanks for stopping by!

Will never forget this was our first “recipe” in home ec class in jr high!

mmm LOVE orange julius smoothies!!! can anyone tell me, if i use the powdered egg whites how much would be the equivalent of one raw egg white? also would you just add the powder right into the blender or mix it w/ warm water first to “reconstitute” like recipes call for? thanks in advance!
Domestic Goddess says
Mixing MILK and ORANGE JUICE will make you VOMIT. The acid in the juice curdles the milk; even if you drink it fast then it curdles in your throat or your belly. This is home economics 101. Remember in Heathers when Veronica wanted to give Heather #1 a milk and oj hangover cure so she’d puke her guts out? Anyone that tries this recipe got trolled hard.
Kristy says
well, no one in my family has ever vomited…and we’ve made it a lot. So I guess the home economics 101 doesn’t always apply. or maybe I’m a super species:)

Last time I had an Orange Julius was in about 1975 in Boulder, Colorado. I used to love them. I made this recipe with the egg white too and it sure hit the spot – brought back some wonderful memories too!
I’ll be making this all summer long!
Thank you,
DeeDee

There’s something so much smoother and more delicious. Start with 20% half & half. Add 80% fresh squeezed orange juice. It mixes easily and naturally (no mixer or stirring) for a tasty concoction that will amaze you.
